Kalakopa Nawabganj
Kalakopa is the most famous place of Nawabganj. It is a magnificent place, bearing the testimony of a glorious past. In the 19th and 20th centuries, this village was once a small business hub, as well as the living place of many rich merchants, mainly salt traders. That trend declined after the division of Bengal. Now, we can find just ruined remnants of numerous structures from the British Raj period, which depict what the place looked like at the time. There are some spectacular buildings that will take your attention such as:
Brajo Niketan (Judge Bari)
The original name of Brajo Niketan, most famous among these, is being replaced by the name ‘Judge Bari’, given by its present owner. It is a late British colonial structure constructed by the family of Brajo Roy. It is claimed that this building is 150- years old. Architectural style represents the late British colonial period. Presently, it seems to be maintained well.
khelaram Datar Kotha
Khelaram Data’s Temple is on this road. This is the only monument protected by the Department of Archaeology (DoA) in Nawabganj. The building, popularly known as ‘Khelaram Datar Kotha’ (house of Khelaram Datta), has recently been renovated by DoA. There is a myth about this house: There was once a bandit called Khelaram. He was very much devoted to his mother, so much so that he would have her bath in a tub of milk! At one point, he abandoned his bad ways and turned into a benevolent person. So, Data (meaning benevolent donor) was attached to his name. The house he built was 7-5 storied high. Only the upper two stories are visible as the remaining 3 or 5 stories have sunk underground, or perhaps, the whole structure was built from under the ground (both views can be found). There were passageways to access the basement floors even a few years ago. Rumour has it that in the past, people would find jewelry in the nearby large pond.
